Britains Greenist Outdoor Company

The Sunday Times names Nikwax as one of Britain’s 60 best Green Companies in its second annual Green List. Nikwax is the only outdoor company to appear in this years list. The list is a definitive guide to businesses with the most radically improved environmental performances. While there are many environmental awards, this one is unique in that 30% of the overall score comes from a staff survey where employees are able to rank their company on 52 statements about green practices. Nikwax excelled in this area, scoring 96% and a top five ranking of staff-rated.

Nick Brown says: “Nikwax employees are very aware of the threat posed by environmental degradation and climate change and co-operate to help to make us a clean and responsible Company. We do not allow our standing as the world’s leading outdoor aftercare manufacturer to compromise our environmental beliefs and to be recognized for this is immensely pleasing.”

HIGH PERFORMANCE, LOW ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

Nikwax products are designed to protect people, clothing and equipment in the outdoors from weather and biological hazards. Nikwax aims to lead in terms of both product performance and low environmental impact, by upholding commitment to technical innovation, product quality, environmental assessment and customer service.

Gear of the year 2008

For those who don’t know the Gear Junkie, Stephen Regenold, he gets after it more than most. He is constantly in action and on the move. Located in Minneapolis, he brings a level-headedness and Midwesterner’s sensibility to his reviews. And his endless energy and outdoor pursuits has earned him a nationally-syndicated newspaper column, an active web site, and a guest column on Outside Magazine’s gear blog, and is a frequent contributor to the NY Times.

Alpinist Mountain Standards award

The Alpinist Mountain Standards reviews apply Alpinist's tradition of excellence and authenticity to gear reviews by providing unbiased, candid feedback and anecdotal commentary to equipment tested (hard) in the field. Our panel is comprised of climbers who use the gear every day as part of their work and play. Only the gear they would actually buy themselves, at retail price, qualifies for the Alpinist Mountain Standards award. The five-star rating system is as follows:

No Stars = Piece of junk.
One Star = Below average.
Two Stars = Average.
Three Stars = Above average.
Four Stars = Pretty dang good.
Five Stars = Nearly perfect. An Alpinist Mountain Standards award-winner. The reviewer would buy this piece themselves.

Outdoor Award 2006

OutDoor INDUSTRY AWARD

There are a number of ways to be an active “outdoor person” – and just as many opportunities to get professional advice on the relevant sporting and leisure products. The quality seal embodied by an OutDoor INDUSTRY AWARD helps consumers navigate the market shoals, indicating high-performance technology as opposed to cheap imitations, innovative breakthroughs as opposed to useless gags and original products as opposed to counterfeit ones.

Messe Friedrichshafen remains the sponsor of this design award for the outdoor industry, and iF continues to organize it. Together we look forward to receiving the newest entries from designers and manufacturers across the globe. The procedure this year is the same as ever, with the best products being actively solicited in the categories: Apparel, Shoes, Backpacks/Travel Luggage, Mountaineering Equipment, Sleeping Bags, Water Sports and Accessories.

An additional highlight is the selection of the OutDoor Celebrity of the Year 2007. This prize will be awarded directly at the show in Friedrichshafen and we are anxious to see which celebrity will claim this honor in 2007. Journalists will serve as the judges, with the winner decided by majority vote.

Outside Magazine Gear of the Year Award 2006

The debate between bigger and lighter ends here. On an early-fall trip in the Wind River Range, Black Diamond's Skylight performed like a big top, allowing a pair of testers (one over six and a half feet tall) to stretch out and stay dry. The shelter weathered a gusty rainstorm with no dripping or swaying and stowed overflow gear without causing clutter claustrophobia. Then it packed away like one of those lilliputian ultralights.

Outside Magazine Killer Value 2007

Pardon our bluntness, but testers were unanimous: This tent has its shit together. How? The weight-to-space ratio is outstanding, the design simple and effective, and the protection bomber. With a quick-pitching hubbed pole design, two doors, and a spacious 36-square-foot interior, the Mesa was the most sought-after tent on an early-winter trip in Washington's Mount Baker–Snoqualmie National Forest. Wraparound mesh is great for both ventilation and star watching, while the bright orange fly adds a touch of good cheer when you're waiting out nasty weather. 5.1 lbs; bdel.com

Backpacker Editors Choice 2004

The wind roared like a 747, sleet and snow tag-teamed all night long, and we hunkered down on the side of Mt. Hood, waiting for something to snap. It was early winter, during the final week of testing for our annual Editors' Choice Awards, and once again we'd come to exactly the right spot to deterime which products would make the final cut. When the storm finally ended, we had more than a dozen winners, plus Editors' Choice Gold Awards for two time-tested favorites and a pair of Green Awards, for eco-breakthroughs.

American Alpine Institute, Guides Choice 2006

Equipment and clothing that have been awarded the Guides Choice designation by the American Alpine Institute have proven to be of the highest quality in their product category. The awards are made on the basis of excellence in design, performance, and durability demonstrated in rigorous international field tests carried out by the professional guides of the Institute.

The American Alpine Institute makes comparative and individual evaluations of equipment and clothing used in mountaineering, rock, and expedition climbing through field tests that the Institute conducts in a wide range of environments throughout the world. Evaluations are made throughout the year in desert, cold weather, rain, snow, high wind, and high altitude environments. The constant and demanding use to which the gear is put by our guides corresponds to many years of use that a recreational climber would give it.

The data and conclusions drawn from the field tests provide manufacturers with critical, independent, and detailed feedback on the durability and effectiveness of their products. The information also assists the Institute in its selection of the world's best gear for its guiding, instructional programs, and expeditions. And the Guides Choice designation awarded by the Institute for the top gear in each product category helps draw the attention of our clients and customers to the most outstanding clothing, camping gear, and technical equipment to be found in the marketplace.
